This came up again on the board so it doesn't hurt to bring it up here, again if I have before. There will be a time in your doll/pony/toy buying life when you will get something that smells of cigarettes, booze, stank and things that otherwise make you think it had a wonderful time at the Riot House. For me it was a vintage Action Man Lifeguard uniform from someone who had no idea what they had, and a Led Zeppelin DVD with a festive smelling case.
Well, this is what I got (on the right) and there was only so much washing could do, outside of fading the gold paint. There should be a white plume and white strap for the cartooche, and the spurs are repros but just getting one is a triumph in its self. Of course this was taken after it was cleaned.
No amount of washing would make those boots smell better, especially if they were headed for storage with the other guard supplies.
Getting smoke smell out is possible in a semi-green "natural" way, it just takes time.
1 Wash what is washable gently by hand and let dry completely, skip this for anything paper
2 Submerge dry items completely in fresh clean old fashioned kitty litter. Added scent thinggies or baking soda is fine but a decent brand of old fashioned Johnny Cat type litter will do best. Needless to say keep this from where the cat can reach it, putting it in a bag is optional. Check the items and remove when they no longer smell like smoke and start to smell like kitty litter. Dust off, wipe off excess dust.
3 Submerge items in powdered laundry detergent, putting in a bag is optional. Choose a scent you like. Check items and remove when you like how they smell. Rinse, if possible, then let air out for a few days.
I was able to get a cardboard DVD case and booklets to smell better with the submersion, just make sure to get the dust and particles out before putting the DVDs back in.
